In 2015, we undertook a renovation project in the hope of easing some of the tension in the Portland housing market. The project was converting the historic and architecturally beautiful Clark Memorial United Methodist Church into novel yet affordable apartments to provide Portland’s middle class with a housing option near the peninsula. Recently, Clark on Pleasant was purchased by Suzanne Hanson as part of a 1031 exchange, which allows people to reinvest proceeds from a previous property sale. Hanson, who spends time in Boston, decided to look for a property in the Northeast. “I was looking for a unique property in a good neighborhood,” she said. “I thought, architecturally, this was very interesting.” Our team utilized unique elements of the building such as original wood beams and Tiffany stained glass windows to retain the historical beauty and add character into the design of these modern units.
