Hardypond Construction renovated the Portland Observatory, a National Historic Landmark, focusing on preserving its historic character while addressing critical building needs. The project required careful coordination and collaboration with experts in historic preservation and renovation to ensure all work met strict standards for materials and craftsmanship.
Scope of Work
The renovation included rebuilding leaky windows, preserving original glass panes, and repairing and refinishing exterior elements. Sustainably harvested lumber from naturally established old-growth forests was used where new woodwork was required. Once the window work was complete, the exterior was repainted and the dome resurfaced, restoring both functionality and historic appearance.
