As churches are closing due to dwindling congregations and limited resources, the empty church structures are being redeveloped into unique apartments. Hardypond Construction has recently completed another project that converted the former Notre Dame des Lourdes Catholic Church in Saco into 19-unique studio apartments, with larger additions being built on either side for a total of 80-units. Many original architectural elements from the church were repurposed in the living spaces. Stained glass from the windows create partitions that separate living spaces and wood from the pews were also incorporated into the design. Churches provide an opportunity to design modern living spaces with character. Older churches are well-built and typically found in the center of an established neighborhood or community, making them ideal for singles, students and seniors.
