Our renovation work on the Portland Observatory presented a unique opportunity to collaborate with experts in the fields of historic preservation, historic renovation, and historic building consultancy. The team that we assembled and proposed to work on the project was deemed the strongest by the City of Portland, which lead to Hardypond Construction being awarded the contract.
Restoration work performed by a prior general contractor resulted in leaky windows, all of which had to be rebuilt. Because of the observatory’s status as a National Historic Landmark, great care was taken to preserve the original glass panes and other materials to meet strict preservation standards. We used lumber sustainably harvested from old-growth trees grown in a naturally established forest.
Once finished with the window rebuild, we repainted the exterior and resurfaced the dome.
