The Saco Transportation Center was a ground-up project designed to be LEED certified. Green building features include:
- Geothermal well – uses Earth’s core temperature to heat and cool the structure
- Synthetic slate roof tiles made from recycled plastic – have long shelf-life
- Shop-fabricated wood trusses – made from sustainably harvested young trees as opposed to old-growth timber – glued together and bent into shape to give them the same strength and structural integrity as single-beam trusses.
- Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs) – give high R value with far less heat loss than traditional insulation.
These sustainable construction methods keep the building’s energy costs down and environmental impact low. In addition, we performed extensive mill work for the center’s indoor counters and outdoor benches.
